M&A – The cultural challenges faced by Chinese investors

From 2005 onwards, Chinese investors have been expanding their activities within the European Union. Since the establishment of the ‘16+1’ cooperation mechanism between 16 Central and Eastern European (CEE ) countries and China in 2012, CEE countries have become one of the ideal destinations for Chinese outbound investment. Among these, high-profile merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions conducted by Chinese stateowned investors attract enormous attention. There are numerous issues that need to be considered in a crossborder M&A transaction. When it comes to CEE countries, serious consideration needs to be given to one historical and political issue in particular: mass privatisation in CEE countries.
